Op Valentijnsdag dit jaar gaf de actrice Ellen Page (bekend van Juno) een toespraak op de Human Rights Conference: Time To Thrive. Ik heb met veel plezier naar haar speech geluisterd. Ik heb zelfs enkele tranen gelaten! Ik vond haar speech erg inspirerend. Maar de reden waarom ik de moeite heb genomen om deze toespraak te bekijken en beluisteren, is omdat ik had gelezen dat Ellen Page in deze speech uit de kast komt. Maar dat is zeker niet de reden waarom ik haar speech al zeker vijf keer heb bekeken. Haar speech zit niet alleen goed in elkaar, maar hij is ook mooi, interessant, ontroerend en bovenal ontzettend inspirerend! Ik raad iedereen dan ook aan om deze speech te beluisteren en actie te ondernemen. Because the world and all of the people on it need you. All of them.
On Valentine's Day 2014 the actress Ellen Page (known from the movie Juno) gave a speech at the Human Rights Conference: Time To Thrive. I've watched her speech and I couldn't keep my eyes dry. I thought her speech was very inspiring! But I've got to be honest and admit that the reason I decided to watch her speech is because I had read she came out of the closet in this speech. But trust me, that's definitely not the reason I've watched it probably five times again! Her speech isn't only technically very good, but it is also very beautiful, interesting, touching and especially extremely inspiring! I recommend everyone to watch it and to take action. Because the world and all of the people on it need you. All of them.
Wat ik zo ontroerend vind aan deze speech is dat je echt merkt aan Ellen Page dat ze zenuwachtig is en dat ze na haar grote coming out erg ontroerd is door de reactie van het publiek. Hiermee toont ze dat lesbiennes, transgenders en homoseksuelen ook maar gewone mensen zijn en dat ook zij verdienen om gewoon blij te zijn en geaccepteerd te worden. En dat vind ik erg mooi, erg inspirerend. En ik hoop dat homofoben dat ook eindelijk inzien. Want wat is er in hemelsnaam mis met anders zijn? Ellen Page heeft het in haar speech namelijk over kinderen en volwassenen die anders zijn, die niet aan de voorwaarden voldoen die de samenleving ons oplegt. Gay of niet gay. Ik ben het met haar eens dat wij, mensen, eindelijk eens wat menselijkheid tegenover elkaar moeten tonen. Eventjes de tijd nemen om elkaars schoonheid te zien in plaats van elkaar aan te vallen omwille van onze verschillen. Het kan zo'n verschil maken! Laten we het samen eens proberen, wat dacht je daarvan?
The thing I find so touching about this speech is that you can clearly see how nervous Ellen Page is en how touched she was by the public's reaction on her coming out. She shows us that lesbians, transgender and homosexuals are also human and that they also deserve the be happy and accepted. And I find that very beautiful and inspiring. And I hope that all of the homophobes now finally realise that. Because what the hell is being wrong about being different? Ellen Page talks in her speech namely about children and adults who are different, who don't fulfill the standards our community imposes at us. Gay or not. I totally agree with her that we, humans, finally need to show a bit humanity towards eachother. Taking five minutes of our time to see eachothers beauty instead of constantly attacking eachother because of our differences. It can make such a big difference! Let's all just try it, okay?
